Take Action
One of the biggest challenges facing those with an eating disorder
is health care coverage for treatment. Often insurance doesn’t fully
cover treatment, and the patient or family is left with an unbearable
decision: go without treatment, or pay for prohibitively expensive
treatment out of pocket.
We urge you to write your political representative, urging
voluntary mental health parity. Mental health parity requires insurance
companies to cover treatment for eating disorders as it would cover
treatment for a physical ailment. Although Minnesota has mental health parity,
this is not a Federal law, and so even residents of Minnesota whose
insurance companies are based outside of the state often do not receive
adequate coverage.
For more information about mental health parity and eating
disorders, please visit www.eatingdisorderscoalition.org.
To find out the names and contact information for your
elected representatives, please visit www.visi.com/juan/congress.
The web site has a feature that lets you automatically email your elected
representatives with your concern.
