Binge Eating Disorder Information

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is a newly characterized eating disorder that is common in overweight and obese individuals. There is usually a feeling of "loss of control" during binge episodes, eating large amounts of food with 1,000's of calories being consumed. The age of onset is unknown.

WARNING SIGNS

  • Often eat alone or secretly.
  • Shows irritation and disgust with self after overeating.
  • Develop a tendency to be perfect in almost everything.
  • Does not share personal problems with others.
  • Self-critical, often depressed, or feels guilty after eating.

During most binges, at least three of the above must be present for a diagnosis of BED. Binges must also occur on the average of at least two days a week for a six-month period. Individuals with BED may not display common symptoms of Anorexia or Bulimia Nervosa; loss of menses or non-purging type behavior (vomiting, use of laxatives, etc.)
