Hope Network

When did the “ideal body image” start to cause a tremendous increase in eating disorders?

Do any of these behaviors sound familiar?  Do you know the warning signs of an eating disorder?  Are there ways to prevent eating disorders?

  • bingeing
  • overeating
  • over-exercising
  • food restricting
  • poor body image
  • low self-esteem
  • being compulsive (OCD)
  • starving yourself
  • losing weight quickly
  • secretiveness about food.

Some facts according to the Anna Westin Foundation:

  • 7 million women and 1 million men suffer from eating disorders
  • 2-5% of persons diagnosed with eating disorders commit suicide
  • 77% of people diagnosed with eating disorders report duration of 1-15 years
  • 10-22% of persons diagnosed with an eating disorder die as a result
  • 86% of people suffering from eating disorders report onset by age 20

Most experts in the field believe that managed care fails to provide adequate funding for eating disorders. Alarming statistics and thousands of families are dealing with the results and they need:

  • HOPE
  • EDUCATION/INFORMATION
  • RESOURCES
  • SOMEONE TO TALK TO

HOPEWhen an eating disorder takes over the body and mind of your loved one, you want to have hope–hope that the person will want help to get better. You want hope that the eating disorder inpatient (or outpatient) treatment program will work.

EDUCATION/INFORMATION – Hard-earned information from families living with an eating disorder will benefit others. We provide help for the family impacted by eating disorders.

  • What works?
  • What doesn’t?
  • How do you find the right treatment center?
  • What causes an eating disorder relapse–and what does it look like?
  • What constitutes an eating disorder?

What constitutes an eating disorder? See how to find answers on FAQ page.

RESOURCES Parent-offered resources they have found useful.  Sometimes eating disorder professionals don’t have all the answers, but experienced parents do–and share their successes (and failures).

SOMEONE TO TALK TO Sometimes the mother and dad just need to talk to someone who isn’t their child’s caregiver.  How did you handle the insurance problems? How do you handle holidays? How do you make sure siblings don’t feel neglected? People can’t be strong and helpful to their loved one if they don’t take care of themselves.

See how to find answers on FAQ page.

Parent-to-parent support is another way for families to cope, to have hope, to learn what others already know.

Hope Network provides answers, support, one-on-one family coaching, resources, and information on eating disorders.

Read testimonials from parents who received help from Hope Network.

The causes for an eating disorder are many; the solutions are many. To find the right one for your loved one is the most important.  Hope Network can help.
